Spark launches new emotionally-charged ‘Wedding Speech’ film via Colenso BBDO
Spark has launched a new film called ‘Wedding Speech’ via Colenso BBDO, continuing its Little Can Be Huge series.
It tells the story of the months leading up to a wedding. An already emotional time is complicated by the sudden hospitalisation of the bride’s father. As it unfolds, the film looks at the powerful connection between a father and daughter, their shared optimism, and a wedding gift made possible by everyday technology.
Says Levi Slavin, CCO, Colenso BBDO: “We made this film to remind Kiwis that the technology in our lives can help create profoundly human moments. At their best, our devices can help us be more human.”
Directed by Christopher Riggert at FINCH, ‘Wedding Speech’ juxtaposes the audio from the wedding day celebration with pictures showing the often-fraught journey running up to the big day. The technique highlights the wide range of emotions that are a hallmark of every close relationship, blending happiness and sadness to create something textured and real.
Says Sarah Williams, brand experience tribe lead, Spark: “Spark is a digital services company – we put connected devices with incredible cameras in the pockets of New Zealanders around the country. This video reminds us that the amazing technology we all use every day is there for one reason: to connect us and bring people closer to each other.”
The film will run on TV, online and in cinema.

I like it. Could have crossed the line into extreme schmultz but stayed away. Thumbs up one again to the Kiwis.

Lol, more like a poor attempt at creating emotional porn to sell broadband.
Yeah, sorry but I felt it really did cross a line.
crossed a line for sure. watching this just made me angry
This is the original heart string puller. This new version is no comparison.

Way better, they should just change the logo to Spark and run that again.
ASB IVF commercial: Everyone is angry
Spark: Hold my beer
Is having to watch the rest of the ad after everyone guessed the ‘twist’ in the first five seconds.
Just dull. NZ TV commercials aren’t fun anymore. Sorry.
It’s not a ‘film’, it’s a commercial, and a cheesy one.
It feels like every Spark brand ad over the last year has had the simple prop of: try make people cry.
Will just be a litter of puppies getting run over.
Then someone calls the family to tell them.
After some crying, they adopt one of those Boston Dynamics robots.
Was this made in the 90s?
Love it. Hit me right in the feels and I’m not even a wedding kinda woman.
In my case, it succeeded. Can see why some people are riling against it, but for me, it’s a big thumbs up.
A beautiful, emotional piece. But…
What the fuck does it have with Spark?
Was it the internet connection to the wedding?
Was it shot on a Spark bought phone?
Why would this change my phone or internet provider?
the guy’s live stream cuts out due to gumby male nurse tripping over a power cord. cord to which power? the broadband or…
Spark have become like an emotionally immature teenager recently jilted by their first love. In their desperation to keep you they shower you with – admittedly useful – gifts that you kind of want but would rather get through other means (Netflix, spotify). Then realising that won’t work they’ll emotionally blackmail you with tales of their dead fathers.
This started 15 years ago with Father & Son and Telecom. Then we get the Mothers Day campaign the other year and now this. At what point will they stop telling us that Dad’s die but maybe using their telco plans could help?
I’m looking for a new phone/internet/homeline package. Will this make me change my mind when I start comparing prices? Nope.
Spark, just do your job.
Enough of this self indulgent emotionally charged crap. The Thai do it far better.
What’s next, attaching yourself to a cause so you can have a copycat Like a girl video?
And by the way, get your sport sorted. The PR disaster that’s resulted makes this ad more of a helpless waste of time.
Good luck with the post campaign analysis.
