Eta launches new brand platform ‘Free Friends With Every Pack’ via Colenso BBDO, Auckland
After a 30-year hiatus, Eta have teamed up with Colenso BBDO to showcase the power of the humble chip.
The bush, the beach or even the depths of the Hauraki Gulf – who knows where your free friends will come from, when you open a pack of Eta chips.
Shot by Adam Gunser of Good Oil, the first film in the new ‘Free Friends with Every Pack’ Campaign features two friends skimming stones. As one opens a pack of Eta chips, they’re joined by more friends than expected.
Says Dave Brady, group creative director, Colenso BBDO: “It’s amazing how many ears prick up when they hear the rustle of a bag of chips. Try it and see who turns up to laugh at your jokes and compliment right until the pack’s empty. The pulling power of crispy fried potato is awesome. Free friends is a great idea to work into.”
Says Tracey Seager, marketing and innovation director, The Griffin’s Food Company: “Eta has proudly produced iconic Kiwi chips for many years and we’ve recently invested in state-of-the art new equipment at our chippery in South Auckland – which is now producing our best ever quality Eta chips. The investment in local manufacturing allows us to celebrate our humble locally sourced potatoes, resulting in delicious Eta potato chips that we’re proud to shout about. It seemed like the perfect time to relaunch Eta – with a completely new brand platform, strategy, packaging design, and TVCs. ‘Free Friends With Every Pack’ not only celebrates the magnetism of Eta chips, but does so in a light-hearted and fun way that truly resonates with Kiwis of all ages.”
The Free Friends with Every Pack platform is being launched in the coming months across TV (including VOD), digital video, mall media, cinema, social and packaging.

I have to say I like this ad.
So do my kids who keep singing the tagline!!!
I think the ads might be working too: I was shopping last Sunday morning (gathering supplies for one of my magnificent Sunday lunches), and when I was perusing the chip aisle I noticed that most of the ETA chips were taken (unlike other brands).
I have no idea if it were because of the ads or they were on special, I hope it’s because of the ads.
Well done everyone.
Hope you had a grand lunch to celebrate!
Nice insight, but it is let down by the execution. Not awful, just could have been a lot better. And from Colenso, you do really have higher hopes.
Great insight. Great comedy. Made me want a chip.
Agree with @.
Nice insight…unfortunately not quite done justice. I can’t tell what backpacker girl throws into the sea. I’m not sure what log man is doing with a log. It’s unclear why fishing man has to throw his mate into the sea to ask for a chip. All a bit random.

Your pompous ad wankery’s probably run its course don’t you reckon? #cringe#beaghost#STFU
Nice insight, nice tagline, very, very confusing ad. Overcomplicated a simple thought.
PS Also agree that “Ghost” really needs to disappear with his or her lame shtik .
If someone wants to write long waffle in the comments does it hurt anyone? Groan and move on. TBH, I kinda like it as a nice throwback to when this industry/site had some discussion and chatter around work.
I feel bad for EMT. They waited 30 years and this is what they got? An average insight with a weak execution. Come on college hill you can do better than this.
It would be funnier if the other characters were skipping the bigger objects not just throwing them.
give ghost a job
