SENIOR ART DIRECTOR (FULL-TIME), MUSEUM OF OLD AND NEW ART, HOBART

The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) is on the hunt for a couple of experienced advertising creatives with serious skills on the tools to join our in-house comms team.

It’ll be fun. Mona owner David Walsh is an ideas guy. An ideas guy who has never heard of the Cannes Lions. He said this once and we’ve been running with it ever since: “Upset people if you can, fail if you must, just don’t let us drift to the f*cking middle.” Thanks for that, CCO Walsh.

Where is it based?

The job is based in Hobart, which is awesome if you like Tassie (also awesome if you hate lockdowns). If puffer jackets and a literal moat between you and the rest of the world doesn’t really sound like your jam… let’s just leave it there.

What will you be working on?

Well, there’s the museum and all its nonsense, so you’ll be working on that. But Mona is actually 40-ish creatively-motivated brands, including two wineries (Moorilla, Domaine A), Tassie’s biggest craft brewery (Moo Brew), a music and art festival (Mona Foma), luxury accommodation, a hatted restaurant (The Source), a restaurant with art on the menu (Faro), the worst-rated burger joint in Berriedale (Dubsy’s), a couple of camouflaged catamarans with fibreglass animals for seats, an ill-advised music program of super-niche gigs, as well as a shop that we literally get to invent the products for (sex toys are imminent). You better like booze (or like working on it) because we also have our own spirits label (Rock Bottom), a bottled cocktail brand (Unholy Water), and a bunch of bars to boot. To balance out our cash-grabs with the feel-goods, Mona’s self-proclaimed ‘first lady’, Kirsha Kaechele, has just launched something dubiously named the ATO (Altruistic Transformation Office) a not-for-profit entity developing a range of programs for families in low-income communities across Tassie and the world. Needless to say Kirsha has plans for her ATO to make and market everything from luxury soaps made using sludge from the River Derwent, to vagina shaped finger bowls made by children. Bottom line, these are good briefs!

In other good news, David gets bored easily so is always building new stuff. Currently he has 43 building projects on the books including some legally questionable luxury accommodation, heaps of new art things, a recording studio featuring the original mixing desk from Abbey Road, a bunch more tunnels that go nowhere, and more bars as we currently only have nine. You will not be bored, or short of creative opportunities.

Experience and skills

You’ll need to have a bunch of experience as a creative (five years minimum in an agency) and a bunch of skills. In fact, the more skills you have the more ideas we’ll be able to make. We don’t rely on production companies to produce our creative, so you have to be comfortable getting super DIY with our small team of designers, writers, and content creators. Ideally you’ll have boss art direction and design skills plus a bunch of digi experience with the software chops to back it up. We have a wish-list covering everything from motion graphics to 3D design, so let’s see what you’ve got. You’ve probably got a slew of awards under your belt already, but you won’t mind leaving the case studies and junkets in a past life, as entering them is not really on the agenda here. When Walshie became David Walsh AO, he declared that ‘nominating yourself for an award and subsequently winning is a lot like masturbating and then declaring it the best f*ck you’ve ever had.’ So you can imagine what he’d think of our lot in adland.

Apply

Sounds like a dream gig? It is, for the right person. You won’t get rich (welcome to the arts) but you won’t die trying either.

Follow the link here and apply with a cover letter, a CV and a link to your portfolio.

Creative teams who fit the criteria for both positions are also encouraged to apply (please apply under the individual roles but tell us who you’re a package deal with).

Applications close 5pm Friday August 20, 2021.
