The Work 2022 Contenders: Colenso BBDO

The Christmas Restraining Order
Colenso BBDO
Every year, ad agencies give their clients Christmas gifts. But 2021 was not a normal year. Covid, the Great Resignation, and fluctuating consumer confidence hit the ad industry hard. By December, we all needed a break. So this Christmas we sent our clients a restraining order, prohibiting any contact for 21 days over the Christmas break. The order was beautifully designed into the label of a bottle of wine, each packaged in a manila box and ‘served’ to our clients in person. The penalties for breaching the order were a cleverly phrased mix of humorous industry insights and harsh legalese.

State Insurance: State Mistake Report
Colenso BBDO
New Zealand is one of the safest places in the world to live, but New Zealanders are not safe people. Their adventurous, do it yourself attitude is a point of pride, but leads to a lot of mistakes. So, State Insurance conducted a two year data audit — one of the largest in insurance history to help avoid mistakes before they’re about to make them. 4M+ data points from claims, weather, statistical and transport data were analysed to create The Mistake Report. An annual report that helps a nation learn about the mistakes they’re most likely to make on specific days of the week, times, locations — even names of people most likely to make them.

Bank of New Zealand: Dancer
Colenso BBDO
Bank of New Zealand and Colenso BBDO have collaborated to remind New Zealanders of the important role a business can play in someone’s life. The ad, directed by Nathan Price at Ruskin, follows a teenage boy with a love for dance living in rural New Zealand. While his skills and dedication to dance are obvious, it’s also clear he’s alone in his pursuit. His story of isolation is set to a stripped back cover of Robyn’s song, ‘Dancing on my own’. The end reveals that while he might be physically disconnected from the people who love what he does, he’s connected through an online dance school.

Spark: Beyond Binary Code
Colenso BBDO
Spark aims to build a digital future with everyone in mind. Unfortunately, most of the internet still runs on two gender data points – male and female. Making the online experience for trans and non-binary people demeaning, and the data captured on them inaccurate and misrepresentative. Spark wanted to help the trans and non-binary community feel seen online through a simple but powerful change. Beyond Binary Code is a pre-built piece of code that can be copied and pasted into any website, instantly transforming forms and fields to include gender inclusive options.

Pedigree: Dogphonics
Colenso BBDO
The fear of failure is shown to inhibit reading progress in children. Pedigree Dogphonics is a Kid-To-Canine reading programme developed with Professor Nancy Gee, and Dr Emma Woodward. The programme consists of 5 books, specifically designed to be read to a good listener, someone who’s extremely patient, full of love and never judgemental. A dog. Titles include ‘It Was Not Me, I Did Not Eat The Alphabet’ and ‘Where Are My Pants?’. Proceeds from book sales and digital book sales go towards rehoming our four-legged teachers.
