Mazda New Zealand appoints The Monkeys Aotearoa as agency of record
Mazda New Zealand has appointed The Monkeys Aotearoa, part of Accenture Song, as its creative and strategic agency of record.
The Monkeys Aotearoa will handle all brand and marcomms activity, including digital channels and data-driven direct communications.
Says Justin Mowday, CEO and country lead for Accenture Song, The Monkeys Aotearoa: “Terrianne Brown, David Hodge and the team at Mazda are the epitome of a passionate, smart and ambitious team determined to see Mazda succeed, and want to do so via a genuine partnership with a new-breed agency.
“We’ll be bringing our full range of brand, communications, data, digital, design and experience expertise to the table for Mazda, and look forward to driving tangible business results for them over the coming years. The automotive category seems to be dominated by black and white winding road shots and Avengers-like blue electricity blurs – here’s to not doing that!”
Says Terrianne Brown, GM marketing, Mazda: “Sometimes there comes a junction when you need fresh thinking and energy, and we felt like we’d reached that point. We’re incredibly excited about The Monkeys and the modern marketing approach they can bring to our business. Mazda is an iconic brand, loved by Kiwis, and we look forward to growing our business even more with The Monkeys.
“We’ve been with Proximity for several years, during which time they have produced many great campaigns for us. We’re very thankful to Proximity and the people that have worked on Mazda, and wish them every success in the future.”
A modern procurement process was run by Mazda NZ, with the assistance of David Thomason to reach this decision. Media strategy, planning and buying will remain with MBM.

Long overdue move. But can’t help but feel the Monkeys will be p*ssing in the wind most of the time. Will be fun to watch! Good luck to all involved.
A famous music track, covered by a kiwi artist and (of course) a character that personifies the brand. Mr Zoom will help New Zealanders zoom through the mundane things of life so they can truly ‘get to where they want to go’, which is not a destination but a mindset.
