Good Oil’s Nick Payne: Cannes 2023, (belated) lessons from a newbie
Good Oil’s head of emerging talent, Nick Payne, sets his fresh corneas on Cannes.
On Footwear
You might have dreams of sneakers and suits, but by Welcome Drinks you’ll learn that everyone is going to see your toenails. Embrace it. All publicity is good publicity, and every foot is worth a thousand words.
On Seating
Easy to feel nervous, hard to go wrong. Unless you’re in direct sunlight. Learned this pretty quickly at La Colombe D’or. But better to sweat in a borrowed suit than on a Picasso (sorry Sam Long).
On Pool Parties
People actually swim! First at the wonderful MOFA / Rumble party, then at our Good Oil Villa party on Wednesday. Nothing like a midweek dip and drink to break up the bustle and beat the heat.
The Palais vs. The Hills
Never did see the Palais. So on that I’ll say the hills are where it’s at.
High Hopes & High Seas
You might be tempted to think that a calendar invite from your boss that says “Boat Day” means you’ll be going on a boat. Don’t be fooled! But I’m told it was an ‘unforgettable’ afternoon full of throaty laughter and water bomb competitions with BMF and the ALDI client.
No Laptop, No worries.
Leave it at home.
Manifest Business Class
I’ll try this again next year.
