Media analysis podcast The Fold unveils triple episode series on NZ’s ‘Big Three’ Media Giants

The Fold, Aotearoa’s premier media analysis podcast, has released the first episode of a three-part series, unpacking the results of New Zealand’s ‘Big Three’ media giants: NZME, TVNZ, and Sky.

Hosted by Duncan Greive (founder of The Spinoff) and Glen Kyne (former Senior Vice President and Head of Network at Warner Bros Discovery for Australia, New Zealand, and Japan), the series digs into each company’s performance, offering in-depth analysis of NZME’s strategic moves, TVNZ’s resilience, and Sky’s turnaround. This series is set to spark important discussions on the future of New Zealand media.

  • The Big Three Episode 1: NZME’s Plans (and Owners) Could Reshape Our Media: The first episode will dissect NZME’s 2024 results, exploring potential One Roof sales, the launch of a new TV-like news “channel”, and the impact of a significant new shareholder.
  • The Big Three Episode 2: TVNZ Has Survived a Year from Hell – But Challenges Loom: In the second episode, Greive and Kyne will examine TVNZ’s resilience, highlighting the challenges of audience revenue, the impact of losing cricket rights, and CEO Jodi O’Donnell’s efforts.
  • The Big Three Episode 3: Sky Has Turned Itself Around – And the Rugby Deal Seems More a Matter of When, Not If: The final episode will explore Sky’s impressive turnaround, the acquisition of domestic cricket rights, and insights into ongoing negotiations with NZ Rugby, suggesting that a deal is likely.

“February saw three of New Zealand’s biggest media companies release their annual results within days of each other,” said Greive. “Glen and I pride ourselves on providing sharp, accessible analysis of New Zealand’s media landscape. We decided to record this mini-series focusing on NZME, TVNZ, and Sky, informed by both our own experiences and our networks of sources in and out of these companies. We think it’s a level of detail and candour you won’t find anywhere else.”

“It’s an exciting time to be in media,” said Kyne. “Our media companies are navigating and shaping the most profound transformations in operating models and value in a generation. Duncan and I love diving into this stuff, and we hope our perspectives will help listeners go beyond the headlines and truly understand what’s at play. NZME, TVNZ, and Sky have all delivered solid results, each with fascinating narratives for the future!”

The Fold’s reputation as the most insightful media analysis in the country has been further evidenced by sold out live events and demand from major media agencies for private panels. “Chatham House” versions of The Fold can be booked through The Spinoff’s commercial team, and have taken place in both Auckland and Wellington in recent months.
