Animates’ Pawprint Petition Campaign Reaches Parliament with 173,000+ Signatures

Today marked a major milestone for pet advocacy in Aotearoa, as Animates officially presented the Pawprint Petition to MP for Maungakiekie, Greg Fleming, on the steps of Parliament. Backed by 173,152 signatures – from both people and their pets – the petition calls for a ban on the public sale of fireworks and is now formally before Parliament for consideration.

Launched late last year, the Pawprint Petition has captured the hearts of animal lovers across the country. The campaign highlights the distress and harm fireworks can cause to pets, wildlife and livestock – sparking an outpouring of support for change. With each digital pawprint collected, the campaign brought attention to a growing movement to make Aotearoa safer and less stressful for animals during fireworks season.

At the heart of the campaign is Animates, New Zealand’s leading pet care brand, working alongside agency partners Hearts & Science and Insiders to bring the initiative to life across media, content, and experiential touchpoints.

“The level of support we’ve seen from Kiwis has been incredible,” says Nathalie Moolenschot, GM – Marketing at Animates. “This isn’t just about one loud night of the year – it’s about protecting animals from weeks of anxiety, injuries and fear. We’re proud to stand alongside the 173,000+ voices calling for meaningful change.”

The campaign combined digital advocacy, real-world activation, and a healthy dose of creativity – including enabling pets themselves to sign the petition with their own unique pawprints. The powerful use of storytelling and public engagement helped the cause cut through and capture media attention nationwide.

Now officially before Parliament, the Pawprint Petition marks a pivotal moment in the movement toward legislative change, as advocates continue to push for a future where fireworks displays are professional, public, and safe for all – including our four-legged friends.
