Bestads Best of the Week Reviewed by Sandra Bold, Chief Creative Officer, VML Netherlands

Each week Bestadsontv.com [the global arm of Campaign Brief] picks the very best advertising in the world, in every medium – which is reviewed by a top creative director or team to select their own personal favourites.

This week’s guest judge is Sandra Bold, Chief Creative Officer at VML Netherlands.

BEST TV

Winner: Flipkart ‘We are Namibia. Above everything, this is an insanely smart idea. And then, it’s also a really funny ad. That explains the brilliance behind the idea. Love the simplicity, dryness and dead pan humour. I watched it 5 times in a row.

Runner-up: Squarespace ‘The Negotiation. I was going back and forth between The Negotiation and Levi’s Backstory until I landed here because I love TV ads where you get served a slice of a story. And also, I love Emma Stone. This film did 2 things for me: reminded me of old Argentinian ads I used to love to watch (Buenos Aires film festival) and made me want to know if Emma Stone will or will not make the guy be sorry.

BEST PRINT

Winner: Reform Political Advertising ‘The Misleading Times. Great medium for a great problem.

No runner-up.

BEST OUTDOOR

Winner: McDonald’s ‘Horizontal Ads. Made me smile. It’s Monday after Superbowl, you’re a football / BadBunny fan, you’re hungover in bed, you want fast food more than anything and you see this ad out the window. You’re horizontal and indecisive, the ad is also horizontal. The ad gets you. Now you’re not indecisive anymore.

Runner-up: Skyro ‘Wrung Billboard‘. It’s not new to use the medium as part of the idea but it’s right on the money.

BEST INTERACTIVE

Winner: Auchan ‘Colorfood Song. Made me think a bit about Dumb Ways to Die but still I really loved the idea. I strongly believe that good food habits are baked into us when young and these kind of initiatives help the process. YES, GOOD.

Runner-up: National Cyber Security Centre ‘How Exposed Am I? I tried on the service. I now know how exposed I am. A lot.

Growing up in communist Romania, the future seemed obscure and unpromising to VML’s Sandra Bold. With many creative career options limited, especially for women, Sandra’s hunger for creativity led her to architecture, a degree she believed would satisfy her artistic desires.

However, even as she went on to pursue architecture, Sandra would find herself once again circling back to the industry and occupying herself with ads on breaks between her projects. Realising her passion, Sandra jumped into advertising working her way up from working as a copywriter to becoming the chief creative officer of the Benelux region for Wunderman Thompson, based in Amsterdam.

From MRM McCann Romania to Publicis London and then Italy, Sandra’s desire to challenge herself creatively by constantly stepping out of her comfort zone has managed to reward her with a very eventful career, creating successful campaigns like KFC’ Little Money Big Fun.’ Moving forward, Sandra aims to bring light-hearted ads back and inspire the industry to make more joyous content that will appeal to the public and reverse the grim tone that the industry has become associated with.
