The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko, gives New Zealand its first look at Billy, an innovative new tool that compares power plans and providers, helping you take control of your energy costs.

In an economy where Kiwi have never been more cost-conscious, Billy provides a simple and supportive way to navigate the complexities of the energy market. Launched by the Electricity Authority, this new consumer-facing comparison tool is designed to give Aotearoa the power to check whether they are getting the best deal for their energy.

The platform is driven by a sophisticated pricing model built from extensive New Zealand household and consumption data, enabling more tailored cost comparisons based on real usage patterns and market pricing information.

Free to use, anyone can search for the most economical power plans by simply uploading their power bill or through a quick Q&A journey. Billy sources these plans from power companies around the country, covering a majority of New Zealand households, meaning most people will see options relevant to them.

Says Sarah Gillies, Chief Executive, Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko: “Electricity is a lifeline, not a luxury. It warms our homes, powers our lives and connects us to opportunity. But for too many people, it’s a source of stress. Heading into winter, many households will face an increase to their power bill. It’s more important than ever to check whether your plan is delivering good value for your household, and whether you could save money with a better deal.”

Daylight has been responsible for Billy’s product strategy, design, engineering, brand development and upcoming launch campaign. Built with evolution in mind and the foundations in place to support new product features, Billy will expand its functionality as the market continues to change.

Lee Lowndes, CEO of Daylight, said the team set out to create more than just a comparison tool: “When household bills are constantly rising, it can feel pretty disempowering. With Billy, we have taken a holistic approach, not only enabling Kiwi to take action through cost comparison, but with educational resources too. Now people have all the tools they need to put their energy in the right place.”

As a distinct consumer brand, the name ‘Billy’ was drawn directly from the power bills the platform is looking to address. Billy is represented by a pair of expressive eyes, a defining feature that carries you through the experience, helping you look at all your options. Supported by a contemporary design system, the result is an approachable, supportive and friendly companion for everyday New Zealanders.

Following the launch of billy.govt.nz, a national awareness campaign is set to go live in early April across AV, out-of-home and social channels.
