Supernormal signs A.J. Greenwood

Supernormal has signed director A.J. Greenwood to its roster, welcoming one of the most distinctive performance-led filmmakers working across Aotearoa and Australia to the company’s growing stable of talent.

Greenwood joins Supernormal from Finch, where they built a compelling body of commercial work defined by emotional clarity, intimacy and a rare sensitivity to people and place. With a background spanning theatre and film — as both performer and director — A.J. brings an actor-led approach to set that draws layered, authentic performances from cast at every level.

Campaigns for Spark and WorkSafe stand as strong examples of their range — work that is crafted and considered, equally comfortable with stylised design and moments of genuine human connection. Over the course of their career A.J. has collaborated with agencies including BMF, FCB and Colenso BBDO, working across clients such as Google, Canva, Heinz Wattie’s and the New Zealand and Australian Governments.

Says Matt McKenzie, Executive Producer, Supernormal: “A.J. has built a body of work that sits at the intersection of beautiful filmmaking and genuine human connection. There’s a quality of empathy and precision in everything they make. A.J. brings a writer’s intelligence and a theatre maker’s instinct to every set, and is one of those directors where the work does the talking. We’re thrilled to have A.J. at Supernormal.”

Says A.J. Greenwood: “What drew me to Supernormal is the work and the people shaping it. There’s an energy here that feels alive, like something just on the edge of becoming. It makes you want to lean in and make things. I’m looking forward to expanding my work visually as much as narratively and collaborating with like-minded people to make some awesome work.”

The signing adds further depth to a Supernormal roster that has been on an exceptional run. The company recently produced The Māori Roll Call — directed by Reagen Butler and created with Motion Sickness for Whānau Ora — which won both the Grand Axis at this year’s Axis Awards and the Grand Prix for Good at Spikes Asia. Supernormal also took multiple Axis Awards for production craft, and director Liv McClymont was recognised as Emerging Craft Talent at the same event. Director duo THUNDERLIPS rounded out a remarkable start to the year by premiering their feature ‘Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant’ at Sundance 2026.

A.J. Greenwood is now available for commercial projects across Aotearoa and Australia.
