Colenso BBDO has fun with launch of Nokia Lumia range as All Blacks take down ‘coptercam’
CB Exclusive – You might have heard some buzz this week around the All Blacks and a coptercam. It started with a news announcement on the All Blacks and Backing Black’s Facebook and Twitter feeds, followed shortly after by the release of a film showing the AB’s smashing a “coptercam” out of the sky with a rugby ball.
So far, over 380,000 people have watched the video on YouTube, and counting.
As the story unfolded, we were told the footage was shot on a phone.
Yesterday, it was revealed that this was a bit of fun had by Nokia, Telecom and Colenso BBDO to launch the new Nokia Lumia range – Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7.5 devices to hit New Zealand.
Colenso attached a Nokia Lumia 800 to a remote control quadcopter that flew over a rugby ground where All Blacks Williams, Dagg, Jane, Toeava and Whitelock were training.
Says Matt Hampton, creative director, Colenso BBDO: “It was great fun filming a one-shot on a phone, from a tiny RC helicopter. The All Blacks hurled footy balls at our hovering coptercam until they brought it down with a well-placed ball. This wouldn’t have been possible without a great bunch of teens, tech geniuses and giant athletes.”
Says Kimberley Bartlett, Communications at Nokia: “This sort of campaign is a first for Nokia in New Zealand and the response has been incredible so far. The footage showcases just how great the Nokia Lumia 800 is, and we had a lot of fun making it happen.”

Oh right, I saw it on Facebook. There wasn’t any Nokia branding though. My son has a helicopter with a camera that can do that. Got it for Xmas. Which is what I presumed they were using. Good flying though, they’re tricky bastards to steer. Nokia? Really.
Cool. Telecom. Really? Yes. Scary.
I’d probably have put some branding in the video. But since the Levis video didn’t have any branding either, I guess that’s how they roll.
Yup, more scam junk as per levi’s… but hey… when you haul vapor-tising like that through Axis I guess you might as well keep on going…
great move making content viewers flock to, as opposed to art films with a meager audience.
let’s remember – it is a popularity contest.
I guess the fact only 5 All Blacks were there “training” was a clue.
Dripping with wack juice
Great ad for Gilbert
All I saw was a bunch of rugby players delighting in breaking something. And I thought “morons”
… like ‘rear view’ it might even pick up a best director nomination at next years axis. Directing is THAT easy….
