99 band The Signoffs take out the Battle of the Renegades title at last night’s BOTAB 2018
Nine agency bands took to the Galatos stage last night in a brilliant display of musical prowess, shady dance moves, and inflated egos.
For the first time in 10 years, 99 have taken out the championship title with its band, The Signoffs.
Although the judging panel, Radio Hauraki’s Matt Heath, Leigh Hart and Matt Ward were impressed by all of the performances, there could only be one winner. 99’s set was tight and their outfits flamboyant. Their whole set was a nod to a bygone era of turquoise suits, slicked back hair and flaming orange guitars. They nailed their wildcard song, Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 by Pink Floyd and had everyone dancing to Johnny B. Goode.
For their efforts, 99 were awarded:
• A production run of their own designed ice cream flavour from Much Moore Ice-Cream
• Their biggest song recorded by Big Pop Studios
• A $500 Lunch at Prego
• A next-morning coffee run thanks to eighthirty coffee roasters
• Most importantly the coveted BOTAB trophy
Newcomers, MBM delivered the Best Performer of the night, drummer Ashlee Choi. Her vocals and stage presence were unparalleled, winning her a travel voucher to the value of $1500 thanks to Fortis Travel.
Thanks to all the bands that competed:
• Fish Taco – Flying Fish
• Pegasus and the Job Numbers – Colenso BBDO
• FCBC – FCB
• The Strands – Saatchi & Saatchi
• Friends Electric – Barnes, Catmur & Friends Dentsu
• The Screaming O’s – Ogilvy
• Rage Against the Machine-Learning – MBM
• The Prototypes – Digital Arts Network + TBWA
• The Signoffs – 99
BOTAB 2018 again saw the support of the New Zealand Music Foundation. Funds raised through collections on the night and the pizza sales will go towards helping tens of thousands of kiwis right across the country every year through music projects that change the lives of people in need. Thanks to everyone who gave generously.
