Heal the Earth: The unsung heroes of regenerative agriculture in New Zealand – A photographic exhibition by Camilla Rutherford

Conventional farming in New Zealand continues to attract local and international headlines for its environmental degradation, but a quiet revolution that’s slowly gaining traction is determined to change that destructive path. Regenerative agriculture offers genuine solutions to climate change, water quality, human health, biodiversity loss and mental health among farmers.

Award-winning photographer Camilla Rutherford documents seven New Zealand stories of re-generative agriculture in New Zealand, and what this means for our planet and human health. She delves deep into the lives of farmers, bridging the urban-rural divide and bringing awareness of what is happening in this dynamic movement. Her work illustrates the real-life struggles, challenges and rewards that farmers working with regenerative farming practices face and what it takes to farm along side nature in our beautiful Aotearoa.

Heal the Earth launches this evening, a two-night exhibition hosted by Icebreaker at their Commercial Bay store in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland. The exhibition is accompanied by a narration piece, which deepens the observer’s experience of these remarkable stories.

Rutherford works in the commercial, print-media and online space. She lives on a high-country merino station in Tarras, which is run on regenerative farming practices. She began documenting its progress in 2017, expanding her coverage of farmers in 2019 when she was awarded the Canon Pro Photographer Grant.
