Mates reunite for some quiet adventures in new TV spots for Toyota Hilux via Saatchi & Saatchi
A suite of three new 15 second TV commercials for Toyota Hilux have drawn on the ‘less is more’ communication style of a fair few of its drivers, to add to the launch campaign from October.
In a clear nod to the new look Toyota Hilux, the starring duo of mates return to admire, quietly, the updated version of their beloved ute, all played out in three distinct everyday settings.
Says Corey Chalmers, creative director, Saatchi & Saatchi: “Hilux has a fresh new look for 2018. We’re continuing to celebrate its understated toughness and rugged good looks in the best way we know how – through the eyes of our two Kiwi guys, who are big on emotion, but not so big on bringing the chat.”
Created in partnership with Goodoil Films, the somewhat mundane adventures of the duo are perfectly captured to continue the beloved storyline.
Goodoil director Fiona McGee managed to capture confidence through quietness when she commented: “Classic male kiwi stoicism is an entertaining idea to play with. I definitely had a lot of fun creating more quiet adventures for the Hilux Boys. Enough said.”
First manufactured in 1968, the Hilux benchmark has been raised again with a more aggressive yet appealing style, and build on the long-standing Hilux attributes of being tough and unbreakable.

2 questions. What happened to Toyota? What happened to Saatchis?
This work is bung. And possums? Sweep that place out.
aw, bert and ernie, cute, still smelling each other’s farts. LOL!
Saatchis Wellington in the 90’s is still NZ’s best ever ad agency. This is crap.
Lost Keys was a great Toyota ad done by Saatchi Auckland. It was designed for the public not the sensitivities of planners and chin stroking CDs…
I don’t mind these, i love Hilux & these spots capture my feelings quite well towards the new model. Toyota finally fixed that terrible front bumper from the last model. yuck.
So what’s the issue?
Classic CC. Love it.
I don’t work at Saatchi nor have I ever but as an outsider looking in I just don’t get why they are such a magnet for the constant belittling of the work. Is it the ghosts of 90’s jealousy that have been passed down by Seniors to the new age of industry entrants? Work is bloody hard to make in the current climate and Saatchi have taken a lot of recent client loses over the past 5 years but I want them to do well. We all should, it makes us all better. Maybe I am just an old Creative with old ideals and want NZ to get back to where we were when I started. Don’t be assholes and maybe try some constructive feedback.
But your name implies that Saatchis is going backwards
