The Spinoff launches Nē? – A new podcast by Māori, for Māori

“Nē” is a versatile expression. It’s both a statement and a question, which variously means “aye”, “really?”, “I agree”, “wow!” and “huh, I didn’t know that” depending on the tone. This perfectly sums up the conversations and the curiosity that drive our new podcast.

The Spinoff Ātea editor Leonie Hayden (Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara) is joined by journalists Meriana Johnsen (Kāi Tahu, Rangitāne) and Te Kuru o Te Marama Dewes (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Rangitihi). Together they’ll be exploring a different kaupapa every two weeks and sharing their views and experiences.

Based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) and Tūranga (Gisborne) respectively, all three are at different stages of their te reo Māori journey and have vastly different backgrounds. It’s this plurality of experience we’re hoping will appeal to tangata whenua all over the motu – the opportunity to learn new things, and the knowledge that their pride, joy, hurt and frustration is shared by many others.

There will be guests coming through every episode – a chance to shine the spotlight on mātauranga Māori, matanga Māori and mates that know how to spin a good yarn.

Episode one: Do you even korero Māori? looks at the different paths each host has taken in speaking their mother tongue, and some of the milestones and frustrations of reclamation. They’re joined by kaiako reo and crack-up content creator Jordyn Rapana aka Instagram’s Jordyn with a Why, who offers some of her thoughts on Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, and the unique ability of Māori to hold mourning and celebration and the same space.

Nē? is Public Interest Journalism funded through NZ On Air.
